Middle School Counseling

Counseling services are available for students and parents. You may contact the counselors directly by phone or e-mail.

Middle School Counselors at ISB strive to support the ISB community in the following ways:

Mission and Goal

The mission and goal of the MS Counseling Department is to meet the developmental needs of adolescents with an array of appropriate counseling services. Our goals are to help students adjust to life in the middle school, to facilitate the development of social strategies as weel as problem solving skills, and to help students become holistic learners within and outside of school.

Counseling

Supportive services for students to assist in removing barriers to academic achievement; help students to identify goals and possible solutions for challenges that cause emotional distress; improving coping skills; strengthen self esteem and generally promote positive behavior change.

  • Co-ordinate and facilitate transitional support sessions for grade 5 students
  • Co-ordinate grade 5 to 6 transition events
  • Departing student transition sessions

  • New Parent Orientation
  • Transition sessions with departing parents
  • On-going meetings with parents regarding their child's needs
  • Attend all grade level team meetings
  • Consult with EAL and Learning Support personnel
  • Consult with teachers and administrators regarding student concerns and programs
  • Coordinate and facilitate Counselor / Administrator meetings
  • Coordinate and facilitate grade 5 to 6 parent transitional evening
  • Consult with School Psychologist
  • Coordinate and facilitate Student Support Team meetings
  • Monitor students of concern
  • Facilitate the New School or Summer Program Application Process for departing MS students and families

Educational Services

  • Parent workshops (i.e. CHATT sessions on adolescent development & parenting in the digital age)
  • Prepare and provide psycho-educational materials related to CHATT discussions
  • Assist with the preparation of mentoring activites
  • Ongoing provision of personal, social, emotional classroom guidance lessons during scheduled mentoring sessions
  • Provide transitional booklets and survival kits for departing students
  • Coordinate and facilitate training sessions for the MS Student Ambassador Program

  • Coordination of referral process for external service provision
  • Coordinate support lab recommendation and placement
  • Student homeroom placement/scheduling
  • Assist with new school / summer school recommendation process
  • Facilitate a quarter 3 & 4 enrichment class
  • Maintain confidential student counseling notes
  • Facilitate an after school activity
  • Participate in student mentoring trips
  • Review prospective student applications
  • Communicate regularly with admissions officers
  • Maintain and update student log entries via Powerschool
  • Attend Beijing Counseling Network meetings
  • Coordinate collaborative MS/HS counselor transition meeting for grade 8 student needs
