Mathematics

The ISB Mathematics Program is dedicated to helping each student develop the attitudes, conceptual understanding, and tools and techniques needed to think, communicate, collaborate, and be self-directed in order to use mathematics to describe, understand, and predict the world in which we live. At the High School level, all students are expected to own and become proficient at using a graphing calculator in their mathematics courses. The use of a graphing calculator is required for all IB and AP mathematics examinations. Although there are many suitable calculator brands, the ISB Mathematics Department encourages the purchase of the Texas Instrument TI-83 PLUS or the TI-84 calculator. The vast majority of High School students will follow one of the paths outlined in the flowchart found in our course guide. Although graduation requires the successful completion of three years of mathematics, students and parents should be aware that most colleges and universities prefer four years of mathematics as an entrance requirement. Students intending to earn an IB Certificate or the IB Diploma must complete two years of their selected IB mathematics course. Please refer to the mathematics courses of study for a more detailed explanation of these courses.
