Issue 16

Welcome, Summer 2008!

The school year now drawing to a close has been an amazing time of challenges, and ISB has met these challenges in true Olympic spirit! From our Opening Ceremony on International Day to the Closing Ceremony on June 12th, ISB has “carried the torch.” We can all finish the year, and begin our summer holiday, with a sense of accomplishment, ready for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the ISB community has responded in concrete terms to the tasks set out by the Strategic Plan III – Roadmap to Greatness. Students have discovered, defined, and cultivated their own unique abilities and interests. Curriculum development has made great strides; communication has been enhanced, and cultural integration and sensitivity have become a significant focus for us all. The accomplishments of students, teachers, and the community in these areas have been outstanding – and should be celebrated.

However, the true colors of the people at ISB have shown through in these past several weeks as China and all of Asia have been rocked by natural disasters. The response to the cyclone in Myanmar was compassionate and strong, and the response to the earthquakes in Sichuan has been remarkable. The initiative shown by ISB students and adults alike, as they raised money and raised awareness, is a testament to the strength and compassion of this community. Such a spirit of giving makes me proud to be part of ISB.

Every year, we must say farewell people who have been an important part of our lives. To the members of the graduating class of 2008, who are about to commence the next part of their journey to adulthood, we extend our congratulations and very best wishes. To our departing students, parents, and staff, we say goodbye and good luck to one and all. Your contributions to our community will long be remembered, and you will always be welcome for a visit or another stay. May each of you enjoy a relaxing summer and receive strength for the next steps in your journey. To all our community, we extend wishes for safe travels and happy holidays.

Sincerely,

Tom Hawkins
